    1929 Flapper Dress

    ~ Description ~

This is a replica of a 1929 dance dress made vintage design sketches from the Flapper era (1925 – 1929).  The dress has a long straight silhouette typical of the late Flapper dance dresses.  The copper/silver black velvet drapes from the shoulders and comprises the lower flounce.  French seams throughout on this pullover style dress.

    Fabric:

Irridescent silver/black flannel-backed satin that resembles the mettallic lame fabric authentic to the era.  It has a glimmering sheen to it.

The burnout velvet swirls with gray silver and copper.  It is painstakenly han- beaded with silver black and vintage copper glass beads rescued from a deteriorated bodice from the Edwardian period.

Beads:  I rescued an Edwardian bodice from an ebay purchase and removed the beads for use on this dress.  The irridescent copper-colored beads are made of glass.

There is an alluring enchantment associated with going back to another period in time. Masquerade balls, costume parties, time machine fantasies have been popular throughout history. Historical reenactment is not limited to Civil War buffs. Renassaince faires, celtic celebrations, and ethnic festivals all underscore the important role of clothing in culture. Maybe a particular era whispers to us with familiar ease, as though we had lived there ourselves once.

It is not a simple matter of donning replica ensembles. There is no magic like holding the real thing in your hands — an authentic chantilly lace collar, a crisp taffeta ruffle, and hand-embroidered batiste — the way it drapes from your palm, its antique scent.  Like an old book,  pieces like these are historical vessels.  They are charms that transport you every time you close your eyes.

My best wishes to you for a exhilirating adventure while closing your eyes in this design.
